7 Tips For Throwing a Garden Party This Summer

Garden parties are a timeless way to enjoy the beauty of nature while celebrating with friends and family.

Whether you're planning a laid-back BBQ, a festive birthday bash, or a chic cocktail gathering, a well-executed garden party can create memories that last a lifetime.

As an experienced party planner, I’ve compiled a list of seven essential tips to help you throw an unforgettable garden party this summer.

And once you’re done here, check out these resources…

For me, nothing completes a garden party more then a bunch of people dressed in Bridgerton styled, tea party cuteness.

If you’re a women this will be quite easy as we’ve already published our complete garden party style guide here on Weeno.

But for a quick overview (and for the men)…

Comfort Meets Style

Choosing the right attire for a garden party is all about balancing comfort with style.

Think light, breathable fabrics and outfits that allow you to move freely and stay cool. For women, sundresses, linen pants, and skirts paired with a nice top are great options.

Men can opt for casual linen suits, khakis, or even shorts with a crisp button-down shirt.

Dress for the Occasion

If your garden party has a theme, make sure to coordinate your outfit accordingly.

I remember one summer I hosted a tropical luau-themed party, and everyone showed up in vibrant floral prints and leis. It really set the mood and made for fantastic photos.

Weather Considerations

Don’t forget to consider the weather. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can protect you from the sun, while a light jacket or shawl might be necessary for cooler evenings.

Footwear is also important—choose something comfortable and practical for walking on grass or uneven surfaces, like flats or stylish sandals.

#2 Garden Party Food Ideas

Crafting the Perfect Menu

The menu can make or break a garden party, so it’s worth putting some thought into your food options. Summer garden parties call for fresh, light, and delicious fare that’s easy to eat outdoors.

BBQ Classics and Beyond

If you’re hosting a BBQ, classics like burgers, hot dogs, and grilled vegetables are always a hit.

For a twist, try marinating your meats in unique sauces or offering a build-your-own burger bar with various toppings.

Last summer, I marinated chicken in a tangy lemon herb sauce, and it was a crowd favorite.

Finger Foods and Salads

For a more casual or cocktail-style gathering, finger foods and salads are perfect. Think bruschetta, mini quiches, and fresh fruit platters.

Salads like a refreshing watermelon feta salad or a hearty quinoa salad can also be a great addition.

Dietary Considerations

Always consider your guests' dietary restrictions. Offer a variety of options, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes.

At my garden parties, I always include a delicious vegan pasta salad that’s enjoyed by everyone, regardless of dietary preferences.

#3 Garden Party Drinks

Refreshing Beverages

No garden party is complete without a selection of refreshing drinks. Set up a drink station where guests can help themselves, ensuring you’re not constantly playing bartender.

Signature Cocktails

Create a signature cocktail that complements your theme. For instance, a tropical luau might feature a refreshing pineapple mojito or a coconut rum punch.

One year, I made a big batch of sangria with fresh berries and citrus fruits, and it was a huge hit.

Non-Alcoholic Options

Don’t forget about non-alcoholic options. Homemade iced tea, lemonade, and flavored water with cucumber or mint are great choices. These drinks are not only refreshing but also look beautiful in glass pitchers with ice.

Keeping It Cool

Make sure your drinks stay cold throughout the party. Use large coolers or galvanized tubs filled with ice to store beverages. If possible, set up the drink station in a shaded area to keep things even cooler.

#4 Choose a Theme

Setting the Stage

A theme can unify your party and make planning much easier. It provides a cohesive vision for decorations, food, drinks, and even attire.

Popular Summer Themes

Full list can be found here of the top 10 summer party themes.

Some popular summer garden party themes include tropical luau, rustic chic, bohemian, and classic picnic. Choose a theme that reflects your personal style and the atmosphere you want to create.

One of my favorite themes was a vintage garden tea party, complete with mismatched china, lace tablecloths, and delicate finger sandwiches.

Incorporating the Theme

Incorporate your theme into every aspect of the party. For a rustic chic theme, use burlap table runners, mason jar centerpieces, and string lights.

For a bohemian vibe, think colorful pillows, rugs, and low tables for a relaxed, cozy feel.

#5 Garden Party Decorations

Natural Beauty

Use the natural beauty of your garden as the backdrop and enhance it with thoughtful decorations.

Fresh flowers and greenery can make simple but stunning centerpieces.

For my last garden party, I used wildflowers from my own garden, which added a personal touch.

Lighting

Lighting is key to creating ambiance, especially if your party goes into the evening. String lights, lanterns, and fairy lights can add a magical glow. Tiki torches not only provide light but also help keep bugs away.

DIY Decor

Get creative with DIY decorations. Hand-painted signs, personalized place cards, and homemade bunting can add charm without breaking the bank. At one of my events, I made candle holders out of old wine bottles, which were both budget-friendly and beautiful.

Keeping Guests Entertained

Games and activities can keep guests entertained and encourage mingling. Choose games that are fun, easy to set up, and suitable for all ages.

Lawn Games

Classic lawn games like croquet, bocce ball, and cornhole are always a hit. I once hosted a garden party where we set up a friendly badminton tournament, and it turned into a highlight of the day.

Check out our full list of 21 garden party games here for both adults and kids.

DIY Crafts and Activities

Consider setting up a DIY craft station where guests can make flower crowns or decorate their own cookies. These activities are great for kids and adults alike.

Live Music

If your budget allows, hiring a live band or musician can add a special touch. Alternatively, create a playlist that fits the theme and mood of your party. One of my friends once brought his guitar to a party, and we ended up having an impromptu sing-along.

#7 Capture the Moment

Finally, my top tip for making your garden party a memorable one is just to take photos. That way you CAN’T forget it. Polaroids are my favorite.

If you don’t have a Polaroid camera and don’t want to spend that much money, I recommend an Instax which you can pick up here on amazon USA or here on amazon UK. Just don’t forget to pick up extra film.

Final Tips and Tricks

Send Invitations Early

Send out invitations well in advance to ensure guests can save the date. Whether you use digital invites or traditional paper ones, make sure to include all the necessary details.

Provide Clear Directions

Make sure guests can easily find your location, especially if it’s a large garden or remote area. Clear signage and a map can be very helpful.

Set Up a Shade Area

Provide a shaded area where guests can escape the sun. Tents, umbrellas, or a canopy can offer much-needed relief on a hot day.

Offer Bug Protection

Keep pests at bay with bug spray, citronella candles, or tiki torches. You want your guests to be comfortable and not swatting away mosquitoes all evening.

Prepare for the Evening Chill

Have blankets or outdoor heaters ready for when the temperature drops. Cozy throws can make a big difference as the sun sets.

Music and Sound

Curate a playlist that fits the party’s vibe and ensure you have a good sound system. Background music can enhance the atmosphere without overpowering conversations.

Waste Management

Have plenty of bins around for easy cleanup, and consider composting organic waste. This keeps your garden tidy and eco-friendly.

First Aid Kit

Keep a basic first aid kit on hand for minor injuries or accidents. It’s always better to be prepared.

Enjoy!

Hosting a garden party this summer can be a delightful way to enjoy the season and create lasting memories.

By following these tips—choosing the right attire, planning a delicious menu, providing refreshing drinks, selecting a cohesive theme, decorating thoughtfully, organizing fun activities, and capturing the moment—you’ll be well on your way to throwing a successful and memorable event.
